Wishing You a Safe, Successful and Happy New Year!

As we return to work and start to get back into the normal routine, only the last remains of the festive season linger. While the decorations may be gone and the presents put away, most patients are still battling the affects of that onslaught of sugary food and drink over the festive season. Why not recommend a product you can trust to help them optimise their oral health once again?

Brushing alone is not enough. The Waterpik® Water Flosser is the easy and effective way to clean between teeth. We also have plenty of choices, so if you need help to find out which one is best for you and your patients, please visit our buying guide.

Resolutions for the New Year: Time for a detox?

Some of your patients might be hoping to counteract some of their holiday indulgences by participating in the Cancer Research UK Dryathlon – involving complete abstinence from alcohol throughout the month of January. A great fundraising initiative for the charity, this is also an effective way of encouraging good oral health.

Other January detox methods are also popular. Drinking green tea, for example, has been loosely associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, lower cholesterol and weight loss – although more evidence is needed to confirm a direct correlation. Studies also suggest that the antioxidants in green tea assist liver function and protect it from the damaging effects of toxic substances such as alcohol.

The benefits of purely juice diets and extreme fasting, however, are questionable at best – plus they can have negative consequences on oral health1. It’s important to educate patients and show them that while eating smaller portions and swapping sugary or fattening foods for healthier alternatives is very good, taking it too far can have the opposite affect on their health.
