A healthy smile is one that you will want to show off in photographs; a survey found that the biggest reason people don’t smile in snaps is because they feel self-conscious about the state of their teeth. At this time of year, promote a pre-holiday check-up to your patients, so any potentially painful problems can be fixed in good time. It will also give you the opportunity to check if their routine is working well enough for them and if brushing technique needs to be refreshed.
When they are away, the basics of good, daily cleaning and oral health habits should be maintained to keep their smile bright and healthy. Remind your patients to stock up on dental care products before they go. When it comes to food and drink choices, some flexibility is obviously allowed; after all it is a holiday! Bottled water after dark beverages, like red wine or sangria, will help prevent staining and can help rinse away any nasties after sugary treats such as ice-cream. Warn them to be careful about anything that could chip a tooth, such as nuts or fish served in its shell, like crab.
And when it’s time for the last-night photograph, tell them to smile! A smile releases endorphins and promotes an enormous sense of wellbeing.
