Michael Wheeler, a dental hygienist at Bramcote Dental Practice in Castle Cary and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent, commented:

"I am a firm advocate of the Waterpik® Water Flosser - both for those patients who are having difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene with bridges or crowns, and those who already demonstrate good oral hygiene routines. The Water Flosser is a very effective product and is relatively easy to use, so it's really beneficial for all."

Equally impressed was Dr Chris Branfield, a principal dentist at Castle Park Dental Care in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire.

"I find Waterpik® Water Flossers especially useful for implant cases. They are perfect for full arch 'all-in one' implant bridges. I introduce the Water Flosser to people who can't floss or won't floss. It is very good for people who struggle with manual dexterity and we have had some marked improvement in periodontal health."

Lynn McCartin, a dental therapist working on HMS Nelson, came across the innovative products available from Waterpik International Inc. at EuroPerio8.

"I thought the Water Flossers were well designed and efficient, offering an effective alternative for patients who don't like using interdental brushes or string floss. I think the option of being able to add diluted mouthwash instead of water to the products will also prove beneficial for some patients' gingival health."

German Martin Roger, dental hygienist from the Apollonia Dental & Cosmetic Centre in Liverpool, adds:

"I like to recommend reliable, efficient and relatively easy-to-use products to patients. When they see the benefits of water flossing they continue to use the products long-term, which encourages a definite improvement in their oral health."

The research speaks for itself

Over 60 published research studies at 25 independent and university-based research centres have confirmed that Waterpik® products provide significant oral health benefits to all patients, even those with braces, implants, crowns, bridges and diabetes.

The Waterpik® Water Flosser has been proven more than twice as effective as string floss for implant patients. A study conducted by Magnuson, et al., subjects were randomly split into two groups. Group one used a manual toothbrush and a Waterpik® Water Flosser with the Plaque Seeker® Tip (WF), while group two used a manual toothbrush with string floss (SF). The results revealed that the WF group experienced 145% better reduction in gingival bleeding around implants compared to the SF group.

In a study by Sharma and colleagues, results showed that the Waterpik® Water Flosser was three times as effective as brushing and flossing and five times as effective as brushing alone for removing plaque. For bleeding, the Water Flosser was 26% better than flossing and 53% better than brushing alone making it the perfect choice for patients with braces.

Improving gingival health

One of the latest studies has demonstrated that the Waterpik® Water Flosser was 54% more effective at reducing gingival bleeding; 32% for reducing gingivitis; and 28% more effective for reducing plaque compared to the Air Floss Pro after four weeks. Furthermore, when another study compared daily water flossing to subgingival minocycline treatment for subjects with moderate to severe periodontitis, the Waterpik® Water Flosser still came out on top. Findings showed the Water Flosser group reduced bleeding using only water by 81% compared to 76% for the minocycline group, proving that the Waterpik® Water Flosser is an effective alternative to subgingival antibiotics for periodontal maintenance.
