Gingivitis: symptoms, causes, & treatment

The main cause of gingivitis is dental plaque. If plaque is not removed regularly, it builds up around the gums and between the teeth.

The good news: gingivitis is both preventable and reversible with good daily oral hygiene and professional cleaning. Adding a Waterpik™ Water Flosser to your daily routine is one of the most effective ways to help restore gum health at home.

Gingivitis Symptoms

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. Common signs include:

  • Red, swollen, or shiny gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Soft or spongy gum tissue
  • Localised inflammation in early stages, spreading more widely if untreated

Gingivitis usually does not cause pain. If it is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious gum disease that can result in bone and tooth loss.

Gingivitis Causes

Gingivitis occurs when bacteria in plaque release toxins that irritate the gums, causing inflammation. Other factors that can increase your risk include:

  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Diabetes or other conditions that affect immune response
  • Poor diet and certain medications

Treating Gingivitis

The Waterpik™ Water Flosser combines pulsation and pressure to remove plaque where brushing and string floss cannot reach.

Clinical research shows that for reversing gingivitis and improving gum health, the Waterpik™ Water Flosser is up to 50% more effective than traditional floss.

If you notice signs of gingivitis, book an appointment with your dentist or dental hygienist. They can assess your oral health and provide professional cleaning and personalised advice.
