Oral care with orthodontic appliances

Having orthodontic appliances such as palate expanders, Herbst, or MARA devices can make caring for your teeth and gums more challenging. Appliances can block access for your toothbrush and make cleaning between the teeth more difficult. Food can also become trapped, which looks unsightly and increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Preventing plaque build-up and removing trapped food particles are essential for maintaining good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

Brushing your teeth and flossing orthodontic appliances

Brush carefully around all parts of your orthodontic appliance and on every surface of your teeth. Ideally, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (last thing at night and at least once more during the day). If you eat or drink something sugary or acidic between meals, rinsing with water can help until you can brush.

A manual toothbrush can work well if used correctly, though many people find a powered or sonic toothbrush easier with orthodontic appliances. Because of the extra hardware, brush heads often wear out more quickly and should be replaced sooner.

Cleaning between teeth

Even the best brushing won't remove all plaque. cleaning between your teeth is essential, but flossing with orthodontic appliances can be tricky. A floss threader is one method, but it can be difficult and time-consuming.

Make cleaning easier

An easier and more effective option is the Orthodontic Tip with a Waterpik™ Water Flosser. The tip has a tapered brush designed to help remove plaque from around appliance parts and between teeth. It also flushes away bacteria and food debris from around the teeth and under the gumline.
